The Austrian Archaeological Institute is an internationally renowned institution in the field of archaeological basic science with excavation projects in Turkey, Egypt, Greece, and the area of the Alps and the Danube. The core strength of the institute is field archaeology in all its sub disciplines as well as cultural and historical analyses based on material remains. One focus is the study of pottery according to contextual, typo-chronological and cultural and historical criteria through the use of methods from the humanities and natural sciences. The team consists of experts as well as junior scientists that are studying specific subject areas as part of academic theses and Post-doctoral programs.

As part of a three-year interdisciplinary research project P 30095-G26 „Geometric/Archaic Pottery from the Artemis Sanctuary, Lousoi“, directed by PD Dr. Michael Kerschner financed by the Fonds zur Förderung der Wissenschaftlichen Forschung (FWF), based on the contextual study and analysis of ceramic finds from the sanctuary of Artemis Hemera of Lousoi its cult activity from the late 8th to the early 5th century BCE should be investigated. An emphasis has been placed on the definition of local cult vessels and related practices in a regional or national comparison.

Responsibilities

- Documentation and scientific evaluation of the ceramic finds

- Coordination of the individual project areas and staff

- Collaborative and independent publications and presentations

- Collaboration in the administration of the project and the resulting activities

Requirements

- Doctorate or PhD in Classical Archaeology is required

- Experience in the methods of ceramic archaeometry

- Experience in the documentation and evaluation of large quantities of ceramic finds - as demonstrated in an academic thesis and/or publications

- Excellent knowledge of English and/or German as well as

- Knowledge of the Greek language

- Ability to complete independent scientific work

- Ability to work as part of a team and openness in scientific discourse

- Willingness to stay at the excavation site for several weeks of research and to conduct research trips

The PostDoc position will start on September 1, 2017 and the length of appointment is 36 months. The annual gross salary is currently € 50,772.40 following the FWF-standard salaries for PostDocs in full-time employment.
