During the three years contract the researcher is going to assess material culture variability for all Paleolithic cultural items included in the project (i.e., lithic, bone tools, ornamental objects, engravings and pigments). Such variability will be linked to environmental variables and subsistence strategies in order to test precise models of cultural change during the time period and within the areas of the project. In particular, for each class of available material culture the researcher will develop a systematic description and a proper classification based on diagnostic features that allow us to compare different archaeological sites. He will used statistical methods, among which methods developed in population genetics, to test explicit hypotheses of the mechanisms of cultural transmission, cultural selection, as well as potential biological-cultural coevolution.
