Offer Description
i3S – Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (hereinafter i3S) is opening a call to award a grant for the development of R&D activities by Master´s enrolled in non-academic degree courses integrated into the educational project of a higher education institution, within the project “Mechanisms coordinating epithelial architecture with cell division”, ref. PTDC/BIA-CEL/1511/2021, financed by national funds through FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P/MCTES, PIDDAC.
Host Institution: i3S - Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde, Porto, Portugal.
Scientific Area: Cell and Developmental Biology.
Project Title: “Mechanisms coordinating epithelial architecture with cell division”.
Workplan:
Epithelial tissues are of fundamental importance in biology and health, acting as essential barriers that compartmentalize animal life. Epithelial architecture and function stems from the apical-basal polarized distribution of adhesion complexes and the associated actomyosin cytoskeleton. Organism development and homeostasis demand a dynamic rearrangement of apical-basal organization during mitotic proliferation of epithelial cells. The candidate will combine expertise on advanced genetic and optogenetic perturbation tools with quantitative high-resolution imaging approaches in Drosophila to uncover conserved mechanisms that control the interplay between cell division and apical-organization that preserves epithelial barrier function and genetic stability. This is critical to understand multicellular life, and will cross scientific frontiers with knowledge that can be applied to the prevention of diseases, such as cancer, which is tightly associated with loss of tissue organization in epithelial tissues. Please see lab website for more information on the Epithelial Polarity and Cell Division group.
