Job Summary

Amigo is currently looking for an experienced Researcher or a Post-Doc, related to the prestigious call INNOSUP-02-2016: European SME innovation Associate – pilot. This fellowship would lead to a 1 year (12 months) post doctorate contract to perform top-notch research in an innovative Italian SME in Rome working in the Climate Service Sector. The candidate will contribute to the XCF project (http://www.africanriskcapacity.org/it/xcf to develop proposals for gaining access to climate financing linked to adaptation initiative to the development of climate-resilient pathways. The candidate will work on the development of a methodology for the detection of changes in the frequency of extreme climate events

The main goal of the project is to identify a suitable metric for the statistical significance of changes in the statistics of extremes in order to provide the baseline for the design of that innovative financial products and risk management tools can be constructed.

Job Description

The candidate will join the research team to develop new methodologies for the detection of climate related changes in the frequency of extreme events (e.g. drought, floods, heat-waves). The project is financed by International Organizations and aims of identifying extreme event distribution variability of an existing Extreme Climate Index.

The scope is to identify appropriate methods for measuring the statistical significance of observed changes in the frequency of extreme events on a time scale of a few years to decades, and to provide the basis for the development of innovative financial products. The candidate will work on long-term time series of atmospheric data and climate scenarios. He will develop specific methodologies to identify changes in the frequency of extreme events using state-of-the-art science and develop software for automatic calculation and identification of such changes. The second part of the program is related to consolidation of the methodology in to a scheme that can be adopted as the basis for the design of innovative financial products for the risk management sector.


The candidate will be actively integrated in the daily aspects of the SME. He will collaborate with the experienced researchers, with Post-docs and PhD Students developing the task and participating to the different meetings.

The candidate will have the opportunity to follow specific courses on business and market analysis, moreover she/he will be trained in soft skills such as project management, communication and Intellectual Property rights.

The candidate will have the opportunity to participate at international conferences to present the results of her/his research and we expect to publish the results in international scientific journals.

The candidate will be in touch with international organization and private companies working in climate science, risk assessment and insurances.


Eligibility criteria

The following criteria will have to be met by the associate:

i) PhD holder or equivalent,

ii) an expertise in line with the job advertisement;

iii) transnational mobility as defined in the mobility rule of the Marie Slodowska Curie Actions (MSCA).

Selection process

The selection process is divided into three parts:

1) CV analysis: During the first part the CV’s candidates and publication list will be scrutinized by AMIGO in order to identify a list of suitable researchers. At the end of this phase we expect to identify about 20 candidates.

2) Written tests: In this second parts the candidates will have to work on two different written tests: one technical with the aim to measure the ability in solving complex problems in short time; one more general with the aim to test the candidate ability in identify problems, solutions and risks in common working life situations. The test will be performed sending one e-mail with the questions to the applicant and giving his an interval of time between 2 and 4 hours to complete the text, after that the candidate has to send back the mail. Finally, a short list of about 3-5 researcher will be selected.

3) Oral interview. During this phase, each candidate has to present her/his proposed methodologies in solving the requested problem. Moreover, she/he will have the opportunity to present his past work and finally she/he will be interviewed by AMIGO core-staff for identifying her/his capacity in carrying out the requested project. At the end of this phase an ordered list of suitable candidates, in preferences order, will be issued.

Gross Yearly Salary in Euro: 51.000,00

Relocation costs: 9600 euros

Offer Requirements

The candidate has to prove very good expertise in the following fields:

• Climate science

• Extreme events statistics

• Complex Systems

• Non-linear dynamics

The candidate has to prove also an in depth knowledge of programming language (Fortran or C or C++) and scientific languages, such as R, Matlab, Python, etc. The use of open source software is privileged.

A good record of publication is expected.
