This is a 18 months part-time research assistant research role: you will conduct a specified programme of research supported by research training, under the supervision and direction of the Principal Investigator (Dr. Silvia De Zordo - University of Barcelona, Department of Anthropology).

You will be part of a research team based at the University of Barcelona (Host Institution). The first part of this study aims to understand the characteristics of European women travelling to the UK, Netherlands and Spain for abortion care as well as to examine the legal/social barriers to access to legal abortion faced by these women.

The primary purpose of your role is to carry out mixed-methods research on cross-country abortion travel at Dutch abortion clinics (by administering surveys and conducting in-depth interviews), and to contribute to qualitative data analysis as well as to dissemination of the research results.

Your principal duties and responsibilities will be:

  • Collect data on cross-country abortion travel at a few Dutch abortion clinics (mainly in Amsterdam and surrounding area) during a 1 year period (months 0-12 of your contract). You will be provided with a research protocol, a survey and in-depth interview instrument prepared by the PI and her Co-Is (Dr. Joanna Mishtal-UCF; Dr. Caitlin Gerdts-Ibis Reproductive Health, USA), and approved by Ethics Committees in Spain and the Netherlands. Prior to starting data collection you will be trained by the PI and her Co-Is, who will introduce you to the clinics’ staff. We aim at collecting up to 50 interviews in the Netherlands.
  • Safely store the research documentation and share it with the PI.
  • Transcribe in-depth interviews conducted in the languages in which you are highly proficient in writing (see requested languages below), if data collection at the clinics allows (because it does not take all your working time).
  • Code the interviews using Atlas (software for qualitative data analysis).
  • Eventually attend relevant public events (conferences, meetings, and demonstrations) on abortion rights in the Amsterdam area and collect news and data on cross-country abortion travel in Europe focusing particularly on travels to the Netherlands.
  • Contribute to the analysis of the qualitative data collected in the Netherlands and update the project’s website, under the supervision of the PI.
  • Disseminate the results of the research conducted in England via scientific papers to be presented at international, academic conferences and to be submitted to international, scientific journals.

Salary (gross): 1.157,15 euros p/month plus partial accomodation expenses during data collection (to be discussed)

The project will cover the travel expenses related to data collection and to your participation in two Conferences, up to a maximum established in the budget approved by the ERC in August 2016.

The research project: this is a 5 years long ERC Starting Grant project titled “Women travelling to seek abortion care in Europe: the impact of barriers to legal abortion on women living in countries with ostensibly liberal abortion laws” (Acronym: BAR2LEGAB; number: 680004). You can find a summary of the research project at http://cordis.europa.eu/project/rcn/203367_en.html

PI’s email address: silviadezordo@ub.edu

Co-Is’ email addresses: Joanna.Mishtal@ucf.edu, cgerdts@ibisreproductivehealth.org
