Offer Description

As a part of the EU MSCA "SmartAnkle Industrial Doctoral Network Project", you will have the opportunity to work towards a PhD degree within our Ottobock Global Research department and the University College Dublin. You will work as a Research Engineer Trainee (d/f/m) with an international team of experienced engineers from various disciplines (mechatronics, (bio-)mechanics, orthopedic technology) to significantly improve the quality of life of impaired people.

The "SmartAnkle Project" is a 3-year Marie Curie training program that aims to address translational challenges to bring novel ankle orthotic concepts into the market. During the project you will be employed by Ottobock in Germany - located in Duderstadt near Göttingen - for 18 months and by the University College Dublin in Ireland for another 18 months.

Duties: 

  • You identify user needs of people with neuromuscular deficiencies in the lower limb as well as the requirements of other stakeholders that provide solutions for these people
  • You will work on new ideas and proposed solutions that meet the needs of our users - working independently and as part of a team
  • Your task is to develop concepts and innovative solutions for a better fitting of lower limb orthosis and to evaluate prototypes with affected patients
  • You will be familiar with the state of the art and competitors, evaluate technologies and generate new opportunities for the company
  • You will be involved in the conceptual design of mechanisms for lower limb orthoses
  • You will design and implement components using 3D CAD software (PTC Creo, Autodesk Inventor)
  • You will develop and adapt body interfaces between the orthosis and the patient
  • In cooperation with the internal manufacturing department you will develop functional samples and prototypes
  • You will validate the functionality of the subsystems and the overall concept

Skills/Qualifications
  • You have completed your master's degree in mechanical engineering, mechatronics or biomedical engineering
  • Having a background in orthopedic technology is desirable
  • You are experienced in working with electro-mechanical components
  • You are able to use CAD-systems, preferable CREO and FEM tools
  • You are familiar with actuator design, dimensioning and implementation
  • You work independently, have analytical skills and you are solution- and goal-oriented
  • You have an interest in international and intercultural cooperation
  • You are willing to learn and will enjoy interdisciplinary and creative work in agile project teams
  • At best, you have professional experience in the care and rehabilitation of neurological patients, ideally in combination with orthotics
  • Experience with biomechanics, simulation software, 3D printing technology and with surface modelling is advantageous
  • Your English skills are excellent, German communication skills are an advantage
