Optical imaging has huge potential to address unmet clinical needs by combining non-invasive and real-time capture of biomedical information with the hope for earlier diagnosis of disease and thus early onset of treatment. This would be of huge socio-economic benefit through better quality of life, reduced therapy costs, reduced recurrence rates, and improved clinical outcomes.
The host institution offers several positions dedicated to multimodal diagnostic imaging combining optical coherence tomography, OCT angiography optoacoustic tomography, multi-photon microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. Enabling said modalities into clinical imaging devices such as endoscopes or surgical microscopes to be clinically applicable is the main challenge, due to the integration of different imaging concepts, scanning and detection methods, and laser sources.
The candidate will work on combined optical coherence tomography (OCT) and nonlinear microscopy (NLM) for ophthalmic, neurosurgical, or endoscopic applications. The aim is to design a hybrid imaging system enabling OCT/NLM for improved label-free, molecularly sensitive diagnosis. On the one hand a high-speed OCT system with a large field of view has to be developed and optimized for the specific clinical application. On the other hand the feasibility of NLM techniques like multiphoton microscopy, SHG or CARS for intraoperative, endoscopic, or ophthalmic chemical imaging has to be evaluated and implemented using dedicated laser sources offered by industrial partners. The research is funded under the H2020 program in collaboration with major research institutes across Europe. The candidate is expected to present his/her research results on international conferences and in peer-reviewed journals.
The host university is the Medical University of Vienna which is one of the leading institutions for OCT in general and multimodal biomedical optics in particular. The candidate is expected to enroll in the PhD program of Medical Physics at the Medical University of Vienna, that offers a interdisciplinary choice of courses in Medicine, Medical Physics, and Optics.

- Master degree in biomedical engineering, photonics, physics or similar ideally with life-science related orientation
- Good knowledge in optics, preferably interferometry and/or nonlinear microscopy
- Good knowledge in image processing and programming (LabVIEW and/or Matlab, GPU programming experience welcome)
- Good English skills
- Willingness to travel and flexibility
