CALL FOR ONE RESEARCH GRANT UNDER THE PROJECT “ Prehabilitation to enhance cancer treatment in patients with adenocarcinoma of the gastroesophageal junction and the stomach- PROTECT ” -(PTDC/SAU-DES/7945/2020)
A call is open to award one (1) research grant for a PhD student, to develop R&D activities within the scope of the project “Prehabilitation to enhance cancer treatment in patients with adenocarcinoma of the gastroesophageal junction and the stomach- PROTECT”- PTDC/SAU-DES/7945/2020), funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT).

2. Admission requirements
Candidates who meet the following requirements can apply for this competition:
- Hold a master's degree in the field of Sports Sciences or Physical Activity and Health;
- Be enrolled in the Ph.D. program in Physical Activity and Health, a requirement to be duly proven at the time of hiring. Candidates not enrolled in the mentioned study cycle can also apply, and if selected, they may subsequently enroll in the same program;
- Reside permanently and habitually in Portugal, a requirement applicable to both national and foreign citizens;
- Demonstrate, through the letter of motivation, a commitment to the tasks to be performed;
- Immediate availability
If the qualification has been conferred by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions of article 25 of Decree-Law No. 66/2018, of August 16th, and any formalities established therein must be fulfilled by the date of the hiring act.
3. Work plan
The scholarship holder will be involved in the completion of the following tasks:
- Evaluation of vital signs, physical fitness, body composition, and application of questionnaires (e.g., IPAQ, Distress, Stress/Anxiety/Depression, Quality of Life);
- Preparation of individual reports for study participants;
- Monitoring (in-person and by phone) adherence to the exercise and physical activity intervention, as well as recording adverse events (related to exercise and treatment);
- Adjustment of the prescription for the exercise or physical activity intervention;
- Synchronization and organization of data from the physical activity monitor;
- Collection, completion, and organization of study support databases;
- Participation in statistical analysis and the preparation of scientific articles, conference presentations, as well as involvement in project dissemination/promotion activities.
4. Applicable legislation and regulations

5. Workplace
The work will be developed mainly at the Portuguese Institute of Oncology of Porto Francisco Gentil, EPE (IPO-Porto), under the scientific guidance of Prof. Lúcio Lara Santos.
6. Duration of the scholarship
The grant will last twelve (12) months, and it is expected to start as soon as possible, on an exclusive basis, cannot be awarded for periods shorter than three consecutive months according to FCT's regulation of advanced training of human resources.
7. Monthly value of the grant:

Payment will be made by IPO-Porto by bank transfer. In addition to this subsidy, the scholarship holders will be covered by a personal accident insurance.
8. Selection Methods
I. Criterion A (60%) - Integrated assessment of the candidate's academic trajectory:
• Subcriterion A1 (50%) - Master's degree classification;
• Subcriterion A2 (10%) - Scientific indicators, including published articles and/or abstracts (or under peer review) in journals within the general area of the competition.
II. Criterion B (40%) - Evaluation of the candidate's professional and research experience:
• Subcriterion B1 (20%) - Experience in prescribing and monitoring exercise in oncology patients, as well as conducting relevant assessments for the project (see Work Plan);
• Subcriterion B2 (20%) - Participation in research projects related to the competition's area.
Merit Rating = (50% × A1) + (10% × A2) + (20% × B1) + (20% × B2)
Note 1: An interview aimed at assessing the degree of motivation, ability to work in a team, commitment to tasks, potential for scientific production and knowledge of the English language of each candidate will occur in the event of a tie.
Note 2: Based on the final ranking list, a reserve list will be created, which will be used for the eventual hiring of new candidates to work within the scope of this project. If none of the candidates demonstrates that they have the profile suitable for carrying out the work plan, the jury reserves the right not to award the scholarship to the call.

10. Form of advertising/notification of results
The results of the evaluation will be announced via the email indicated by the candidates in their Curriculum Vitae/Letter of Motivation.
Candidates have a period of 10 working days, counting from the day immediately following the notification, to express their opinion, if desired, in a prior hearing with interested parties, under the terms of article 121 et seq. of the Administrative Procedure Code (CPA) .
11. Form of submission of applications and application deadline: the call is open from the 19th December 2023 to the 3rd January 2024 (until 23:59, local time). - Motivation letter;
- Candidate's Curriculum Vitae;
- Certificate(s) of academic qualifications and evidence of relevant training;
- Up to two recommendation letters;
- Declaration on honor that the applicant fulfills the requirement set out in article 6 of the Research Grants Regulation from FCT, IP (model below).
Proofs must be attached directly to the application, without the use of links to external platforms/drives. To guarantee the reading of all documents, the preferred recording format is the Portable Document Format (.pdf). Files must be named with the candidate's first and last name and must not exceed, as a whole, 5 MB. These can be compressed in .zip format.
