Offer Description

The University of Iceland invites applications for a three-year PhD position in Human Geography or Tourism studies at the School of Engineering and Natural Sciences - Faculty of Life and Environmental Sciences.

The position is a part of the doctoral network Visitor monitoring and management in protected and recreational areas: new challenges, novel solutions for the Anthropocene - VIMAS, funded through the EU Horizon Marie Sklodowska-Curie Action.

Main tasks

In total ten fully funded PhD candidates will be engaged in the VIMAS project. The advertised position will be at the University of Iceland in human geography or tourism studies and will focus on social inclusion, access, and equal opportunities in visitor management. The candidate will investigate how improved visitor management, increased understanding of participation, and barriers to access nature can enhance social inclusion and equal opportunities in Nature Based Tourism. The project aims to help understand contemporary discourses and changes and significantly support the governance of future recreational opportunities. It furthermore should shed light on the relationship between neoliberalism, tourism and nature destinations and how nature-based tourism shapes and commodifies nature. Further description is to be found on VIMAS web page (PhD project number 8): https://www.nmbu.no/en/research/projects/vimas.

VIMAS' aims to develop more efficient governance of nature areas for tourism and recreation in the best way possible for biodiversity, people's quality of life, and business development. The project will conduct research to identify smarter monitoring methods, improve visitor management, and create more inclusive governance models. The VIMAS consortium comprises seven partner universities in six North European countries, with support from fourteen partners in business, public management, and applied research from Europe and North America.
