Position Overview

This is a fantastic opportunity for a high caliber PhD/PostDoc within the biophotonics field to join our dynamic Innovation Business Unit. This role is key to developing our biophotonics innovation projects. M Squared Lasers are commercialising a range of novel biological analysis tools that use our laser systems to deliver advanced -diagnosis performance for in vivo and ex vivo applications. We require scientists with broad experience across photonics and biological analysis, able to develop novel innovative instruments from conception to prototype. This is a fixed term contract for 12 months based on funding from the European Commission and located at our headquarters in Glasgow. M Squared Lasers are looking for candidates who envisage moving onto a permanent position within the company. We offer a competitive salary and benefit package.

Ideal Candidate 

We are looking for an excellent and highly motivated candidate with a relevant PhD Proven experience in the design and build of complex biophotonics tools. Proven experience of aligning and testing opto-electronic/laser equipment. Laboratory (wet) bench experience for biological analysis to a high quality. High level of verbal and written English, and ability to convey complex technical information. Qualifications: PhD/postdoc in Raman spectroscopy, experimental biophotonics, biomedical imaging, photonics, lasers or relevant applications. Publication record in high impact peer reviewed journals. Knowledge: Knowledge of bio- relevant Raman spectroscopy, lasers and biological sample preparation.

JOB DESCRIPTION

M Squared Lasers (MSL) was named the 8th fastest growing technology company in the UK in 2012 and the fastest in Scotland (Deloitte Fast 50). Recently, MSL was named as a Bloomberg Business Innovator 2016 and recently won Enterprise Queens Award 2016 for innovation. MSL are looking for a Biophotonics Engineer who has experience in the development of novel and advanced photonics systems for analysis of bio-relevant samples. Key Responsibilities: Design, build and optimise leading biophotonics into advanced analytical tools from concept to product. Develop programming approaches to spectroscopic de-convolution of complex Raman spectra of biological fluids. Gain, maintain and develop a focussed view on the real world uses of novel biophotonic tools, with a view to their commercialisation. Fault diagnosis of complex experiments, lasers, optical and electrical equipment. Engineer approaches to gain best signal to noise, optimum performance. Identify routes to miniaturisation and ruggedisation. 

Researchers can be of any nationality but need to demonstrate transnational mobility, i.e. move from one country to another when taking up their appointment. At the time of recruitment by the host organisation, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organisation UK for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the reference date. Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not taken into account. 

Working Conditions and Benefits 

The successful candidate will be an employee of M Squared Lasers and will be paid in accordance with the Funding rules. The contract period will be for 12 months. The candidate will be working under the supervision of M Squared’s Head of Innovation, Dr Nils Hempler. 

The starting date of the appointment is foreseen by September 2017  (there is flexibility of an earlier start but no later than September 2017) if required by personal circumstances.
