Offer Description

Introduction

As a Material Sciences Physicist or Engineer in CERN's Engineering Department, you will have the opportunity to lead a highly specialised workshop using the vacuum brazing technique for the fabrication of accelerator or detector prototypes. You will become an expert in vacuum brazing with international collaborations in the field of high energy physics. You will manage top level equipment and experienced technicians. Come test yourself against a diverse range of fabrication technologies, serving as the link between physics and mechanical production. You enjoy both scientific and laboratory work. Take Part!

Functions

As a Vacuum Brazing & Heat Treatment Physicist/Engineer in the Forming & Welding Section, after a period of familiarisation and learning, you will:

  • Master and develop vacuum brazing, diffusion bonding and heat treatment technologies for fabrication of high-precision prototypes and components of accelerators and detectors.
  • Contribute directly to practical work, maintain and develop high level workshop facilities.
  • Be responsible for Vacuum brazing and heat treatment activities: manage and coordinate a team of highly specialised technicians, provide technical support to the team.
  • Be the main reference interface with CERN-wide users for vacuum brazing and heat treatments related aspects in design and methods. Review engineering drawings and technical specifications. Provide input on design, materials selection and standards.
  • Take an active role in multidisciplinary projects, maintaining close collaboration and co-operation with the other engineering facilities CERN-wide.
  • Establish a network and maintain contacts with specialised laboratories / institutes worldwide.
  • Document work through written technical reports and represent the group in international conferences.

Education Level
Master Degree or equivalent
Skills/Qualifications

Master's degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field or a related field.

Experience:

Demonstrated experience / knowledge in material science, physical metallurgy, atomic diffusion, thermodynamics and manufacturing.

Solid scientific knowledge as well as hands-on direct and practical experience would be an advantage.

Experience in ultra-high vacuum would be an asset.

Technical competencies:

  • Knowledge of metals and alloys: composition, structure, properties, heat treatments: in-depth knowledge of material sciences in particular surface chemistry, thermodynamics, heat treatments of metals, materials selection and characterization;
  • Knowledge and application of ceramics: knowledge of ceramic manufacturing process and properties;
  • Manufacturing of mechanical parts: hands-on ability and knowledge in high-precision mechanical engineering, vacuum brazing and heat treatment;
  • Operation and maintenance of vacuum systems: good understanding of the material behaviour under combined high vacuum and high temperature, advance programming of vacuum systems;
  • Production of 2D drawings and 3D models: ability to read/interpret technical drawings and ISO tolerancing (dimensional and geometrical product specification standards), ability to design tooling and draft technical drawings.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Achieving Results: Delivering high quality work on time and fulfilling expectations. Being rigorous and producing quality results at first attempt. Having a structured and organised approach towards work, being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind.
  • Managing Self: Working well autonomously, taking on activities and tasks without prompting. Taking initiative beyond regular tasks and making things happen. Remaining objective, focussed and productive in a stressful environment, focusing on solutions rather than problems.
  • Learning and Sharing Knowledge: Keeping up-to-date with developments in own field of expertise and readily absorbing new information. Sharing knowledge and expertise freely and willingly with others, coaching others to ensure knowledge transfer. Creating or participating in forums to exchange experience, comparing techniques and learn from others.
  • Communicating Effectively: Expressing opinions, ideas and suggestions with conviction and in a logical/structured manner, keeping to the point. Ensuring that information, procedures and decisions are appropriately documented.
  • Working in Teams: Cooperating constructively with others in the pursuit of team goals, balancing personal goals with team goals. Building and maintaining constructive and effective work relationships. Seeking to help other team members when own work is done, supporting others.

Language skills:

Spoken and written English or French: ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations in at least one of the two languages. Basic knowledge of the other language would be an asset or an undertaking to acquire it rapidly.
