TER, the Division of Terrestrial Ecosystem Research, Department of Microbiology and Ecosystem Science, is looking for a highly motivated PhD student interested to work at the interface between ecological modelling, soil microbial ecology, and biogeochemistry.

The aim of the 4yr-PhD thesis will be to investigate the feedback of soil C cycling to climate warming. It will focus on the effect of plant-soil microbe interactions and soil microbial community dynamics on organic matter turnover in soil using both experimental and modelling approaches.

Your future tasks:

Your responsibility will be to write a PhD thesis (scientific papers) and the participation in research projects. Additionally, it is expected that you assist in the supervision of students. Teaching to the extent of the collective agreement provisions is required.

This is part of your profile:

  • Master or diploma degree in ecology or a related field
  • Practical expertise in at least two of the following fields: ecological modelling, soil microbial ecology, biogeochemistry 
  • Advanced programming skills in R and Python
  • Experience with analytical laboratory techniques of terrestrial ecosystem research, in particular extraction of phospho- and neutral fatty acids from soils and analysis with GC-MS and/or GC-IRMS.  
  • Strong data analysis skills, experience with analysis of microbiome data 
  • Experience with microbial co-occurrence analysis would be of advantage
  • Background/Experience in the ecology of the mycorrhizal symbiosis would be an asset.
  • Very good English skills

Applicants must have the ability to work in an international team, have good communication skills and should be highly motivated and committed to pursuing interdisciplinary research. Excellent English in speaking and writing is mandatory.

The employment duration is 3 years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 3 years if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a declaration of non-extension.
