The objective of this PhD work is to develop a novel 3D deformation sensing system which is based on fibre optic sensing technology up to the point of a technological transfer to an industrial partner. The work will involve the development of distributed fibre optic sensing based on weak Bragg gratings to provide continuous 3D deformations along the entire length of, for example, an existing cast iron tunnel where the cable length is fully attached. In this work, we expect the student to: (1) conceive the whole system; (2) define the critical design parameters; (3) collaborate with other FINESSE partners to develop a distributed sensing technique based on special fibres developed in FINESSE; (4) set up a demonstrator for validation and field test and (5) ensure technological transfer to industry to develop a commercial product.
The candidate must have a Master/Engineering degree in Civil Engineering/Electronics Engineering, preferably with experience in instrumentation and monitoring. The candidate should have good knowledge and interest in both experimental and theoretical modelling work. Interest in the broader field of optical fibre technologies and measurement technologies is required. Knowledge in the field of optical fibre sensing and a track record in scientific publications are great assets.
Candidates will be required to meet the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Early Stage Researcher eligibility criteria: (http://ec.europa.eu/research/mariecurieactions/). In particular, at the time of appointment candidates must have had less than four years full-time equivalent research experience and must not have already obtained a PhD. Additionally, they must not have resided in Spain for more than 12 months in the three years immediately before the appointment.
