Call to double budget for next EU research programme

The next EU research funding programme should be doubled in size. That is the recommendation of the high level group appointed to reflect on the future of funding after Horizon 2020. The group also calls for further involvement of citizens in science.

​The independent 'High Level Group on maximising the impact of EU Research & Innovation Programmes' has published its strategic recommendations. The chair of the group, Pascal Lamy, presented the report yesterday, at a conference that gathered over 700 scientists, innovators, business representatives and policy makers in Brussels.

The report calls for a doubling of the current budget of Horizon 2020, from around €80 billion to €160 billion. According to Lamy, a former Commissioner and former Director-General of the WTO, investing more in science and innovation is needed to generate growth and sustain the European economic and social model. "We believe it is the best investment that Europe can make for its future."
