Luís Baptista, Dean of the School of Social Sciences and Humanities of the NOVA University of Lisbon (NOVA FCSH) makes it publicly known the opening of  a tender,  for the period of 15 business days, for the international selection of three PostDoctoral researcher positions,  through an indefinite duration contract at Universidade Nova de Lisboa - Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas, to carry out research in the scope of the project FILM AND DEATH - “Film-Philosophy as a Meditation on Death” (NOVA FCSH - IFILNOVA) supported through European funds within the scope of the research and innovation program Horizon Europe of the  European Union  (European Research Council, Grant Agreement n. 101088956).

The opening of the tender and the composition of the selection panel have been authorised by decree from the Executive Administrator of NOVA FCSH, in the scope of the delegation of powers under the terms set forth in paragraph i) of no. 2 of Dispatch no. 11072/2021, of 3 November, published in the Diário da República, 2nd series, no. 219, of 11 November, as amended by Dispatch no. 2331/2023, published in the Diário da República, 2nd series, no. 34, of 16 February, of 24 May 2023, following a favourable statement from NOVA FCSH’s Scientific Council.

1. The contract procedure of the PostDoctoral researcher is to be carried out according to the Decreto-Lei No. 57/2016, of 29 August, amended by Decreto-Lei 57/2017, of 19 July, which approves a contracting regime for PhD holders designed to stimulate scientific and technical employment in all areas of knowledge (RJEC). It will be entered into in accordance with the Portuguese Labour Law, approved by Decreto-Lei No. 7/2009, of 12 February, in its current wording and Decreto Regulamentar No. 11-A/2017, of 29 December.

2. The PostDoctoral researcher will be contracted for an indefinite duration as lawfully established in RJEC, art. 6, nr 1, only for the duration necessary to perform the tasks as defined for the project, namely as follows.

3. Description of the position:

The tender is for the selection of three PostDoctoral researchers.

The FILM AND DEATH - “Film-Philosophy as a Meditation on Death” project intends:

Main goal:

The project has three key aims: 1) to demonstrate that film-philosophy contains significant philosophical insights; 2) to show that such insights are best understood by means of film’s novel ways of thinking of time, finitude, and death; and 3) to argue that film’s thinking about finite time gives new meaning to philosophy’s traditional role as a meditation on death. The operational concept to explore and implement is the death image.

Specific goals:

Systematic investigation on the project’s hypothesis and development of its operational concept. The theoretical framework is outlined by the themes and inquiries presented in subprojects 1 and 2 dedicated to the relationship between philosophy of film and metaphilosophy and to the relationship between cinema, philosophy of time, and philosophy of death, respectively.

Researchers will be integrated into the project team, contributing to the following scientific research tasks and knowledge dissemination:

  1. Helping the PI and remaining team members developing the working plan;
  2. Participating in national and international conferences related to project themes;
  3. Organizing the Film-Phil Lisbon Seminars and presenting annually ongoing research in one of the seminars;
